“If you talked to people the way advertising talked to people, they’d punch you in the face.”
Hugh McCloud (no relation) put that comment on one of his now-famous business card cartoons. When I read it, I knew he could easily be talking about voiceover.

So in this breakout session, I'll be talking about "conversational" voiceover. "Non-announcer" voiceover. "Real" voiceover. "Relatable" voiceover. What it is, what it's not, and about the expectations placed on performers when any of those words in quotes are in the direction of an audition.

Takeaways

  • How does conversational VO function in different genres of voiceover?
  • How does the conversational read work in a voiceover audition?
  • And where did conversational VO come from anyway?
